Your first appointment Our first appointment together will last approximately one hour and is virtually painless. With this time we would like to become better acquainted with you and your individual needs. We'll do a complete oral examination including soft tissues, bone, teeth and bite as well as an oral cancer screening. In order to provide a complete diagnosis and offer the best options for care, a current set of complete radiographs (x-rays) is necessary. We will make every effort to minimize your amount of radiation exposure. After our evaluation we will coordinate a plan of action with you and your dentist which best fits your needs. In all cases we respect your individual ideas about your treatment needs and will work within these parameters. We encourage our patients to become involved in their treatment and welcome your questions. We strive to communicate your options clearly and a few weeks after our meeting you will receive a copy of our findings and plan outline which we send to your general dentist. Periodontal Health Our practice specializes in the management of periodontal (gum) diseases. We are prepared to provide you with a full range of services including preventive, interventive, cosmetic, and emergency periodontal care. Preventive Periodontics Periodontal disease is an ongoing process which affects the gums and bone supporting your teeth. The main goal of periodontal therapy is to prevent or control the disease process and allow you to maintain your teeth in a state of health for your lifetime. Slowing the destructive process of gum disease is dependent upon prevention. Prevention involves the daily home care, good nutrition, regular examinations and professional cleanings that keep your mouth healthy. Good dental health involves a team effort between yourself, your dentist and the periodontist. We'll do our part to provide the best that dentistry has to offer. Your commitment is necessary in order to maintain the advances that we have gained through attention to brushing, flossing, diet and overall health. Intervention In an effort to increase the longevity of your teeth, interventive services may be recommended. Conservative non-surgical approaches are utilized for most teeth. However surgical therapy may be indicated if other options are exhausted in an effort to help you retain your teeth. Cosmetic Periodontics Our office is at the forefront in addressing concerns you may have about your smile. Dr. Engert has lectured extensively on enhancing esthetics. Just some of the improvements which can be discussed include management of short or long teeth, correcting discoloration and creating a natural appearance when replacing missing teeth.
